A rainbow was the inspiration for this beautiful art glass square dish.
This piece has had two firings in a kiln. The first firing is to fuse the coloured glass pieces together and occurs at a hot 810 degrees centigrade. When glass is heated, it softens and if more heat is applied, it begins to melt and flow. When two or more pieces of glass are heated together at first they will stick, or tack together. When heated further, they will melt together, flatten out, and become one solid piece of glass.
The second firing is to slump the glass into the dish mold to give its shape. This occurs at a slightly lower temperature of 635 degrees centigrade.
